Training for a 10k?
Let BYR play an essential role in your training program!

Some of the best cross-training runners can do is yoga, which can help improve breath control, balance, mental focus, and flexibility.

Bikram Yoga can be especially good for "tight" runners who need to loosen up and relax their muscles.

Triathlete John R. testifies that Bikram Yoga improves his regimen:

"I have found that spending 90 minutes in the hot room focusing on nothing but body alignment and stretching has improved my core strength and in turn my fledgling amateur triathlon career. The heat of the hot room allows you to stretch areas that are normally very difficult to stretch, it flushes all the toxins from your body, and I burn close 1,000 calories. I would recommend this to anyone who is doing triathlons or any other sporting activity where you find very little time for stretching. This will not only improve your flexibility, but also help prevent over-use injuries."

We recommend that you participate in at least two classes per week to see an impact on your running performance.

Enjoy 5 weeks of unlimited yoga for only $125.00 (a $140.00 value). Offer valid for classes from March 1-April 7, 2007.

BYR-West End Grand Opening Success!
More than 125 people visited our beautiful new location at the Shoppes at Twin Oaks during our Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, January 20.

Instructors gave tours to a rich mix of supportive regulars from our South Side studio, nearby students who expect to be "regulars" now that the West End studio open, and lots of "new to Bikram Yoga" students.

Prize drawings for BYR T-shirts, Bikram's book, and gift bags were held throughout the day. David Noe won the 10-class card. The 25-class card was won by Sarabeth Smith. The lucky recipient of the complimentary year of free yoga is Allison Dixon.

Many thanks to everyone for their interest, encouragement, and hard work. We needed every bit of it to get the new studio together!

Generous Spirit Permeates BYR-South Side Studio
BYR raised $632.00 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital during the fundraising class on January 13.

More than 30 generous participants and BYR's $5.00 per person contribution helped to top BYR's 2006 charitable gift, which was $150.00.

St. Jude is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. No family ever pays for treatments not covered by insurance, and families without insurance are never asked to pay.

St. Jude is financially supported by ALSAC, its fund-raising organization. In the past five years, 83.7% of every dollar received by ALSAC/St. Jude has gone toward current or future needs of St. Jude.

Discipline in the Studio: "The Importance of Stillness"
"How many times have you heard, 'don't wiggle, don't wipe, hold still, look in the mirror, breathe.'? That brief moment of stillness, after completing one posture and before moving into the next, has untold benefits when practiced consistently, day after day. By avoiding the temptation to move, whether it's to wipe your face, fidget with your clothes or hair, readjust your towel, or pick up your water, you pick up the reins and begin to control the chariot of your mind."

--Joani Nunez-Winter

Featured Posture: Kapalbhati in Vajrasana (Blowing in Firm Pose)
We begin our practice with a breathing exercise, and we complete the series with a breathing exercise.

Blowing in Firm Pose
• strengthens all the abdominal organs
• increases circulation
• makes the abdominal wall strong
• trims the waistline
• allows the body to release toxins through the respiratory system

The challenge? Your stomach muscles are the only part of you that is supposed to move - your shoulders, arms, or lower back should not move with the abdomen.

Remember: your mouth is just a passageway for the air!

Sweat-iquette Tips: What about Water?
• Please refrain from drinking water until after Eagle Pose (teacher will announce "Party Time," the water break).

• After Eagle, students are free to drink water during any break.

• Do you need water or oxygen? Stand still and breathe before you grab for your water bottle.

• Kindly avoid drinking water when other students are in a posture.

• Expend less energy and keep the energy focused forward: place your water at the top corner of your mat.
