We will put the "fun" in our St. Jude Children's
Research Hospital Fundraiser: January 13
|
Join us Saturday, January 13, 2007 at 9:00 a.m. at
BYR-South Side to help raise funds for St. Jude Children's Research
Hospital.
St. Jude is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in
finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic
diseases. Founded by late entertainer Danny Thomas, St. Jude freely shares
its discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world.
No family ever pays for treatments not covered by insurance, and families
without insurance are never asked to pay. St. Jude is financially supported
by ALSAC, its fund-raising organization. In the past five years, 83.7% of
every dollar received by ALSAC/St. Jude has gone toward current or future
needs of St. Jude.
The suggested donation for this event is $10. In addition, BYR will
donate $5 for every person who participates in the class. For more
information, please email us: bikramyogarichmond@gmail.com.

Elemental Body Aligment System (EBAS) Workshop with
Scott Putman: January 20
|
|
Scott Putman, creator of the Elemental Body Alignment
System (EBAS), will lead a workshop at BYRSouth Side on Saturday, January
20, 2007 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
EBAS is a series of stretching and strengthening exercises designed to
increase flexibility, range of motion, and core strength. This technique
teaches basic principles of how the body moves and empowers the learner to
develop a conscious relationship with their body. The awareness gained
through EBAS can be translated to movement techniques, such as yoga and
dance, allowing for a deeper understanding and advancement of the
practice.
"We are honored to have Scott lead this workshop again," says
Co-Director/Co-Owner Meredith Kirchner. "It is such a great way to make a
deeper connection to your yoga practice. Many students who have taken an
EBAS class have remarked the program was a real 'eye opener' for how to get
their bodies and minds to work in tandem, which improved the quality of
their yoga postures. Students of all levels will benefit from participating
in this event."
Scott is an Assistant Professor in dance and choreography at Virginia
Commonwealth University. He is the founder and Artistic Director of the
contemporary dance company Amaranth, resident choreographer of Pasadena
Dance Theater, and faculty member of California State Summer School for the
Arts. Scott received his B.A. from Columbia College, Chicago, and an M.F.A.
from the University of California at Irvine, where he was a Chancellors
Fellow and William Gillespie Scholar. Scott is also the creator of the
Elemental Body Alignment System (EBAS) and is greatly influenced by dance
science and Eastern/alternative health modalities.
The cost of the workshop is $20. Pre-registration is required.

Free Day of Yoga: January 27
|
BYR and other Richmond-area yoga studios, including Just
Be Yoga, Integral Yoga, Inlight Yoga, Glenmore Yoga, and others, will reach
out to the community by offering complimentary classes on "Free Yoga Day"
on Saturday, January 27, 2007.
BYR's free classes will be held on Saturday, January 27 at 10 a.m. at
the West End location and at 4 p.m. at the Southside location.
The "Free Day of Yoga" was started in 1999 by the Yoga Alliance to
promote awareness about yoga's benefits across the country. Since then, it
has spread to other cities - as far away as Guam. Participating cities
offer free or reduced rate yoga classes to introduce people to the benefits
of Yoga.
It is a great opportunity for students to try out different styles,
teachers and studios. It also provides a wonderful opportunity for teachers
to meet with each other as they organize and host this event.
For more information about Richmond's First Free Day of Yoga, please
email BYR (bikramyogarichmond@gmail.com) or the organizers of Richmond's
Free Yoga Day (freeyogadayrichmond@gmail.com).

Featured Posture: Pranayama Series (Standing Deep
Breathing)
|
It's the New Year: let's start at the very beginning!
Standing Deep Breathing should be done before any kind of physical
activity. Because it expands the lungs to their full capacity, it increases
circulation to the whole body, waking everything up and preparing the
muscles for action.
Most people use only 10 percent of their lungs, never allowing their
lungs too reach maximum expansion capacity. As a result, they are
susceptible to emphysema, asthma, shortness of breath, and other breathing
problems.
This pose teaches you to use the other 90 percent of your lungs.
Standing Deep Breathing:
brings fresh, oxygenated blood to the body
is good for mental relaxation and detoxification
helps maintain good blood pressure
|
|
|
|
|
|
Another reason to keep practicing
yoga....
|
|
Bikram Yoga's 26 postures systematically move fresh,
oxygenated blood to 100 percent of your body, to each organ and fiber,
restoring all systems to healthy working order, just as Nature intended.
Proper weight, muscle tone, vibrant good health, and a sense of
well-being will automatically follow.

Sweat-iquette Tips: The Sound of
Silence
|
Please refrain from talking in the yoga room. Many
students use the time before class to quietly meditate and center
themselves as they prepare for class. Visiting is allowed in the lobby and
changing room areas.
Honor the silence of the room by moving quietly.
When entering and leaving the yoga room, please softly shut the
door behind you.
